Who do the British think they are (and why)?

A recent poll asked a large number of British people the question:
What do you think defines Britain?

The top three answers were: • British people’s right to say what they think • Britain’s defiance of Nazi Germany in 1940 • British people’s sense of fairness and fair playSo why did British people think these things define Britain?

The answers lie in our history. Using a mixture of documents, photographs and film extracts, you are going to explore how these three features have been important in British history. You are also going to consider how far they really are features of British history.
