Why did Mac think life was so great in the 1950s?

Harold Macmillan
In 1957 British Prime Minister Harold Macmillan made a speech. In the speech he said something which stuck in people’s minds…

"The people of Britain never had it so good"

What made the Prime Minister say this? Like most people, he remembered that life was often hard in the 1930s and 1940s. Compared to those times life in the 1950s was good.
